Building Blocks ~ A Great Way to Learn New Knitting Skills

It's been a fun year of knitting for this beginner. I've learned so much in a short amount of time and am continuously exploring the internet and bookstores for new projects. As I look deeper and find more projects that are of a higher skill, one way that I've found for mastering a new skill is by making building blocks. Building blocks are  large squares that allows you to learn a new skill. These blocks can be used to practice or you can sew them together to make blankets, pillows or throws.

The first building block that I made when I first started to knit used the basic knit and purl stitch.

BOTTOM BORDER
Cast On 48 (long Tail Method)
 K= Knit,       P= Purl

Seed Stitch
Row 1:   *K1, P1* repeat
Row 2:   *P1, K1* repeat
Repeat Row 1&2 for a total of 6 rows.

BODY
First four and last 4 stitches of each row is seed stitches (from above)
example: Row 1: K1, P1, K1, P1 *then pattern, repeat between*  K1, P1, K1, P1
                Row 2: P1, K1, P1, K1 *then pattern, repeat between*  P1, K1, P1, K1

Row 1:  *P4, K1, P1, K4 *repeat between*
Row 2:   *P3, K2, P2, K3 *repeat between*
Row 3:   *P2, K2, P1, K1, P2, K2 *repeat between*
Row 4:   *P1, K2, P2, K2, P2, K1 *repeat between*
Row 5:    *K2, P3, K3, P2 *repeat between*
Row 6:    *K1, P4, K4, P1 *repeat between*
Work above rows 10 times, ending last repeat after Row 6
